In quite possibly the most heinous display of profiteering greed to hit livejournal users, garrish product advertisements will now adorn all basic journals (for logged out users or non-users alike). That's right - alongside your musings on pop culture, why that boy won't write you back, and political debate, SnorgTees will be stretching out their esurient fist, wagging its hunger in your face much less in the guise of a petition, but rather as a threat.I am requesting that all white hat hackers and crackers and culture jammers and adbusters alike unite in a boldly defiant act of netizen sedition against this corporate catering. Post comments to this thread with contact info, and let's make our presence known.
*ahem*http://adblockplus.org/en/Best. Plugin. Ever. Two clicks, and the offending ads go *poof*.
Opera also has a built-in way to accomplish the same thing. This would not happen, though, if there weren't people who buy the crap. Any disgusting behavior won't stop until the profit is removed.
There are always some idiots, and since the commercial phase of the Internet started, advertising costs have dropped so dramatically that even if only one in ten million viewers of some online ad decides to buy anything, there's still enough profit in it.I think the only solution to the problem is the typical Internet geek solution: Filtering, filtering, filtering. The advertisers will figure out new ways around the filters, the geeks will program better ones.
Thanks. I notice however that when this is installed, the format of my LJ becomes deranged for logged out viewing. Perhaps a small price to pay?
